What should you compare?

1

Service type

Is it a document generator, professional will writer, adviser-led service or regulated solicitor?

2

Review process

Does a qualified person review the document, and what exactly does that review cover?

3

Total cost

Check amendments, subscriptions, storage, printing, telephone support and any later charges.

Online will services by location

Online services generally operate nationally. These links move to a local-information section rather than implying a provider has a local office.

Most services listed here are online and available across England and Wales. A location reference does not mean the provider has a physical office in that town. For complicated circumstances, search the Solicitors Regulation Authority register or a trusted local legal directory for a regulated solicitor.

Practical will-writing guides

Plain-English starting points before selecting a service.

A

Choosing an online provider

Compare service scope, review process, amendments, support, privacy and the circumstances the product excludes.

B

Can an online will be valid?

An online-generated document is not effective merely because it was downloaded. It must be executed correctly under the applicable law.

C

When to use a solicitor

Use professional advice for tax planning, trusts, overseas assets, businesses, farms, capacity concerns, likely disputes or complicated families.

What makes an online will legally effective?

In England and Wales, the document generally needs to be in writing, signed by the person making it with the intention of giving effect to it, and witnessed correctly by two suitable witnesses present at the same time. Complex circumstances require professional advice.

Should a beneficiary witness the will?

A beneficiary, and normally the beneficiary’s spouse or civil partner, should not witness the will because the gift may fail. Use two independent adult witnesses.

When is a simple online product unsuitable?

Examples include foreign assets, businesses or farms, tax planning, trusts, blended or disputed families, vulnerable beneficiaries, questions about capacity or pressure, and deliberate exclusion of a dependant.

Editorial and ownership policy

Listings are intended to help users compare service models. Inclusion is not an endorsement. The operator-owned service is clearly marked, and providers should not be ranked secretly in return for payment.
